SONNET 49 |
PARAPHRASE |
|---|---|
| Against that time, if ever that time come, | Against the time, if it ever comes, |
| When I shall see thee frown on my defects, | when you will show your disapproval of me, |
| When as thy love hath cast his utmost sum, | when all your love for me is 'calculated', |
| Called to that audit by advis'd respects, | and 'withdrawn' by reasons of an 'audit', |
| Against that time when thou shalt strangely pass | against the time you will pass me in the street, |
| And scarcely greet me with that sun, thine eye, | and barely acknowledge me, with what to me is the sun, your eyes, |
| When love, converted from the thing it was | when your former love of me |
| Shall reasons find of settled gravity, | shall find reasons to change, |
| Against that time do I ensconce me here | against that time, I fortify my position |
| Within the knowledge of mine own desert, | knowing my own self-worth, |
| And this my hand, against my self uprear | but still (in spite of all this) I raise my hand against myself |
| To guard the lawful reasons on thy part. | to defend the justice of your case. |
| To leave poor me thou hast the strength of laws | You have, under any law, the right to leave me |
| Since why to love I can allege no cause. | since there is no reason you should love me. |
