SONNET 49
PARAPHRASE
Against that time, if ever that time come, Against the time, if it ever comes,
When I shall see thee frown on my defects, when you will show your disapproval of me,
When as thy love hath cast his utmost sum, when all your love for me is 'calculated',
Called to that audit by advis'd respects, and 'withdrawn' by reasons of an 'audit',
Against that time when thou shalt strangely pass against the time you will pass me in the street,
And scarcely greet me with that sun, thine eye, and barely acknowledge me, with what to me is the sun, your eyes,
When love, converted from the thing it was when your former love of me
Shall reasons find of settled gravity, shall find reasons to change,
Against that time do I ensconce me here against that time, I fortify my position
Within the knowledge of mine own desert, knowing my own self-worth,
And this my hand, against my self uprear but still (in spite of all this) I raise my hand against myself
To guard the lawful reasons on thy part. to defend the justice of your case.
To leave poor me thou hast the strength of laws You have, under any law, the right to leave me
Since why to love I can allege no cause. since there is no reason you should love me.
